Buckley Old Engine show chugs to town

Annual event brings machines from as far as Maine, California

BUCKLEY — The clangs and whistles of tractor engines are sweet music to Jim Luper's ear.

A trustee for the Northwest Michigan Engine and Thresher Club, Luper says there is just something about the sound of a tractor engine that gets him going.

He will get an earful this weekend when the club hosts the 45th annual Buckley Old Engine show that begins today and runs through Sunday afternoon.

"We've got machines coming from Maine to California and everywhere in between," said the Kingsley native who has been coming to the annual event all his life.

"I'm 43 and this is my 43rd show. It just keeps getting better every year," he said.

Luper expects more than 1,200 engines will be on display including a personal favorite, an 1897 Huber steam tractor.

"It was actually underwater for 41 years, in the water near Tippy Dam before it was fished out," he said.

Luper said the wide variety of antique tractors, threshers and other agricultural equipment include everything from the "restored to the 9's showpiece" to the unrestored "in its working clothes" machine. But, he said, that is just the beginning to the family-friendly event.

Exhibits and attractions include antique cars and trucks, a flea market and old-time arts and crafts. "There will be demonstrations using a spinning wheel and making soap and you can actually learn how to use a loom and try it for yourself," Luper said.

New this year, the Ford-Fordson Collectors Association is holding their national show in conjunction with Buckley's event.

Jack Crane, who brought a 1941 Ford 9N tractor like the one his father used, said the group picks a different show each year to bring in members from across the country.

"We pulled in here and were just overwhelmed," said Crane, of Lebanon, Ind., as hundreds of exhibitors set up their displays on Wednesday. "(We) couldn't believe that all of these machines were all the way out here."

The show begins at 9 a.m. today through Sunday and concludes with a spark show at dusk. The show grounds are a mile west of Buckley. Admission is $10 per day or $25 for a four-day pass. Children 15 and under are free.
