Traverse City — A 5K Trail Race on Saturday will help replace a pick-up truck used as a mobile medical clinic by The Lamp For Haiti Foundation.
The nonprofit organization works with the people of Haiti to advocate for the respect and protection of basic human rights in Cite Soleil, Port-au-Prince. It provides basic health care and nutrition, investigates allegations of human rights abuses, and provides educational and humanitarian aid. The truck used as the foundation's mobile medical clinic has been transporting Haitian workers and international volunteers, and delivering fresh food and water to the tent cities and outlying slums. The vehicle has been badly damaged by poor road conditions and climate and needs to be replaced.
"Truckin' For Haiti" will start at 9 a.m. at Hickory Meadows. Race packets can be picked up from 4 to 9 p.m. on July 23, at Right Brain Brewery. Last-minute registration and packet pickup will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Hickory Meadows the morning of the race.
Registration is $25 for adults, $15 for 5K runners ages 11 and younger, or $5 for the child's mile. There is a maximum registration fee of $60 per family. Late registration fees will apply. For details or to register, visit www.truckinforhaiti.org.
