Area nonprofits need more help than ever

TRAVERSE CITY — The Father Fred Foundation and other regional nonprofits say the winter season and a cold start to spring triggered a noticeable drop in donations.

At Father Fred in Traverse City, it's mostly a shortage of bedding and housewares. Benzie Area Christian Neighbors, in Benzonia, pays about double the amount of utility assistance this season than it did last year. And in Mancelona, sluggish resale purchases aren't generating enough revenue to cover operations.
