TRAVERSE CITY — The Grand Traverse County Board of Public Works voted today to proceed with plans to levy a special annual property tax assessment of about $25 on properties that have septic tanks.
The board set its first public hearing for Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. in the Garfield Township hall. The board will mail postcards to each property affected by the proposed tax to fund the county’s money-losing septage treatment plant. The board also agreed to set up informational meetings for the public and allocated $5,000 to rent meeting space and advertise the meetings. The dates of the informational meetings have not been set.
Public hearings must be held before the board votes to apply a new tax to upcoming property tax bills.
"We’ll establish the first hearing and the informational meetings, listen to what people have to say, and then decide where we go from there," said Rob Manigold, Peninsula Township supervisor and a member of the BPW.
