Duke halts wind farm plans

TRAVERSE CITY — Duke Energy Renewables stopped plans for a wind farm in Benzie and Manistee counties.

The company proposed placing about 112 wind turbines in Joyfield, Blaine, Arcadia and Pleasanton townships to generate 200 megawatts of output in a 12,000-acre area.

The plan sparked debate amongst residents and property owners who signed lease agreements to install turbines on their land.

In a statement released today, Duke officials said the "timing" for the project "may not align with the anticipated need for renewable power in Michigan's wholesale electricity market." The company will move forward with five wind projects in Kansas, Texas and Pennsylvania.

Duke Energy's Beulah office will remain open through March 30.
