TRAVERSE CITY — A Grand Rapids woman plans to surrender to police amid allegations she repeatedly stabbed her cousin with a broken beer bottle after he refused to give her a ride home from a fireworks display.
Grand Traverse County authorities charged Felicity Theresa Miranda-McSauby, 28, with assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder. The felony is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and/or $5,000.
Miranda-McSauby and her cousin, 19, of Mount Pleasant, both watched the Fourth of July fireworks display at Sunset Park off Front Street along Grand Traverse Bay. Miranda-McSauby got into the backseat of her cousin's vehicle hours after the fireworks display concluded and requested a ride home.
But the cousin told Miranda-McSauby to get out of the vehicle and said he'd drive her home only if she paid him.
"He stated that they argued and she exited the vehicle and was screaming and yelling and was upset," police reports show.
She circled the vehicle, then reached through the passenger side window and stabbed her cousin in the right knee with a broken beer bottle, court records show. The victim told police she tried to cut his throat with the bottle, so he raised his forearm to block the stab attempts. He received two additional lacerations on his right forearm.
The victim and his girlfriend drove to a McDonald's restaurant on Front Street to ask for directions to the nearest hospital.
His girlfriend eventually drove him to Munson Medical Center, where he received stitches and staples to close three stab wounds.
The victim and his girlfriend last week identified Miranda-McSauby as the assailant through a photo lineup. Traverse City police Capt. Brian Heffner said detectives spoke with Miranda-McSauby, and she plans to hitch a ride this week to Traverse City to turn herself in.
