KALKASKA — Wyatt Miller endured 12 hours of brain surgery to remove an arteriovenous malformation, or AVM, and is recovering in a downstate hospital.
Wyatt, 12, of Kalkaska, suffered a stroke after the AVM ruptured while he slept on March 8. Surgeons operated all day Wednesday and believe they completely removed the AVM, an abnormal collection of blood vessels, and didn't cause any additional damage to Wyatt's brain, said his mother, Amy Miller.
Amy Miller sent an e-mail message to friends, family and supporters on Thursday, reporting that Wyatt came off a ventilator and is breathing on his own, but remained groggy after 15 hours under anesthesia. His face and head are swollen, but doctors said that's normal, Miller wrote.
On Friday, Helen DeVos Children's Hospital officials said Wyatt is in fair condition.
