Police say trio beat up man

No criminal charges have been filed yet

TRAVERSE CITY -- Three local men beat up another man and took his wallet outside a city apartment, police said.

Authorities on Monday interviewed the suspects, but no criminal charges were filed against the Traverse City men who authorities declined to identify before they are charged.

The suspects allegedly grabbed the victim, 33, covered his mouth and assaulted him around 6 a.m. Monday as he left an apartment along Barlow St. The victim fell to the ground and was kicked several times by the suspects, police said.

The victim and his attackers knew each other, city police Capt. Steve Morgan said. He said it appears the suspects waited outside the apartment for the victim to leave.

"They knew he was coming," Morgan said.

The man was treated Monday at Munson Medical Center for abrasions, lacerations and possible broken bones. His girlfriend attempted to break up the assault, and recognized one of the attackers after she pulled down his hood, police said. All three suspects wore hooded sweatshirts.

The suspects allegedly stole the victim's wallet and personal papers, and fled the scene in a white vehicle. Grand Traverse sheriff's deputies later spotted the vehicle on LaFranier Road in Garfield Township near King's Court Mobile Home Park.

Authorities arrested the suspects, and they were taken to the Grand Traverse County Jail. City police found the victim's wallet and personal papers in the vehicle.
