KINGSLEY -- A public hearing on plans for a deep-injection disposal well is scheduled in Kingsley.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will hold a public meeting and hearing April 21 at St. Mary's Hannah School, 2912 W. M-113 in Kingsley. An informational meeting is from 6 to 7 p.m., followed by a public hearing from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Team Completion Services LLC, of Kalkaska, applied to state and federal regulators for a landfill leachate permit for its well near the intersection of Miller Road and M-37 about six miles west of Kingsley. It would allow the company's well to take landfill leachate from Glen's Landfill in Leelanau County, and continue to accept brine water from oil and gas operations. It would be Michigan's third commercial disposal well for non-hazardous industrial waste, joining facilities in Johannesburg and Pinconning.
Federal regulators initially set the hearing for early April at Mill Creek Elementary School in Williamsburg, about 25 miles from the well site. Regulators changed the hearing date and location after citizens complained about the location. The comment period for the well reclassification also is extended through May 5.
