TRAVERSE CITY -- The secretary of the Grand Traverse County Commission on Aging board faces felony drunken-driving charges.
Authorities on Thursday charged Steven Earl Chapman, 45, of Traverse City, with felony drunken driving.
Chapman on March 2 failed to stop at the intersection of Hammond and High Lake roads in East Bay Township. He told a Grand Traverse sheriff's deputy that he consumed alcohol prior to driving, court records show.
He was taken to Munson Medical Center, where his blood-alcohol level was tested at 0.18 percent. Chapman has two prior drunken driving convictions in 2004 and 2006, and has yet to be arrested on the most recent charge.
The Grand Traverse County board first appointed Chapman to the Commission on Aging in 2006, and reappointed him for a second three-year term that began Jan. 1, 2009. He was elected by the COA to its executive committee, serving as board secretary.
Georgia Durga, COA director, said she was surprised to learn Chapman had three drunken-driving charges and described him as "a very good board member."
