Man allegedly stole car and drove drunk

TRAVERSE CITY -- A Traverse City man faces charges of drunken driving after he allegedly stole a car from a local hotel and crashed it.

The suspect, 19, was taken to the Grand Traverse County Jail after the incident early Saturday.

State troopers from Traverse City said they tried to stop the vehicle about 2:40 a.m. after it allegedly left and re-entered the parking lot of the Quality Inn hotel in East Bay Township.

The suspect, whose name was not released pending arraignment, allegedly drove through a series of parking lots and residential neighborhoods, police said.

Troopers said the chase went on for roughly five minutes before the suspect allegedly crashed near the Reffitt Nature Preserve and ran away. The vehicle had been stolen from the Quality Inn, police said.

The suspect was discovered at his home, police said, where he was arrested on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, fleeing and eluding police and motor vehicle theft.
