Federal funds to go toward upgrades

EAST JORDAN -- More than $2 million in federal money will help East Jordan upgrade water and sewer systems.

East Jordan will receive $1.7 million to improve the municipal water system by replacing about 9,000 feet of water mains. Additionally, East Jordan will receive $675,000 to improve the existing sanitary sewer system by extending it by 4,100 feet.

The loans are distributed through the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development program.

Another Charlevoix County community also stands to receive a grant.

The Northern Lakes Economic Alliance in Boyne City received $33,000 to establish a small business incubator network and program. That grant comes from the USDA's Rural Business Enterprise Grant program.
