Family Dollar opening second store in TC

TRAVERSE CITY — A second project is underway at a new commerce center along Division Street.

Family Dollar store will open a second Traverse City location in developer Gerald Snowden’s WestCreek office and retail project just south of the Tom’s Food Market complex near 14th and Division streets.

It’s next to the new local office of the Social Security Administration that’s slated to open by late summer.

Family Dollar is a national discount store chain with 7,200 stores across 45 states. It also operates a store along South Garfield Avenue and several others in the area including Honor, Benzonia, Kalkaska and Mesick. It offers some food products, home items, paper goods, apparel and seasonal items such as gift wrap and greeting cards.

The new store will be nearly 8,000 square feet and should open about Oct. 1, Snowden said. The design will be an upgrade from standard Family Dollar layouts, with a block and brick design and a pitched roof to better fit with the design of the nearly 10,000-square-foot SSA building.

“I wanted it to be compatible with the first building going up,” Snowden said. “We’re going to dress it up a bit.”

WestCreek will access the neighboring Tom’s complex to create a more diverse commercial area that features retail and grocery stores, offices, a pharmacy and laundromat.

“It creates a bigger neighborhood center now,” Snowden said.

Snowden bought the 1.5-acre site in 2007 from Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan. Goodwill used to operate a homeless shelter there in a former motel. The property remained vacant until last year, but now both development sites have projects underway. The SSA will move from its location on Munson Avenue.

“The market’s starting to move a bit,” Snowden said. “Deals are starting to happen.”
