Elk Rapids Schools hire superintendent

ELK RAPIDS -- Elk Rapids Schools has a new superintendent.

Steve Prissel, currently the superintendent of Buckley Community Schools, signed a contract Friday to take over the Antrim County district beginning Jan. 1.

Board members voted 6-0, with member Doug Coates absent, to approve hiring Prissel prior to signing the contract Friday.

He will replace former Superintendent Jon Hoover, who retired at the end of August.

Prissel's contract runs through 2012. A $110,000 base salary this year will be prorated since he is starting in January, interim Superintendent Mike McIntyre said.

Prissel has a bachelor's degree in special education learning disabilities from the University of Wisconsin in Eau Claire and a master's degree in education from Central Michigan University, according to Elk Rapids Schools. He is working toward a doctorate degree in educational leadership from Eastern Michigan University.
