District will close for official's funeral

MANISTEE -- A local school district will shut down this week after its superintendent unexpectedly died.

Manistee Area Public Schools Superintendent Robert Olsen, 53, died Sunday afternoon after suffering a stroke Friday night. Olsen spent 10 years with the district.

The school district will close Wednesday so students and staff can attend Olsen's funeral. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. John the Baptist Church in Hubbardston, with a showing at 11 a.m.

"He was a wonderful man," said Dorothy Rhodea, Olsen's secretary. "He was a man that everyone looked up to."

A memorial service also will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Manistee High School gymnasium.

Donations can be made to the school district's library, St. John the Baptist Church or the Olsen Family College Fund.
