Agencies get $600K for housing help

TRAVERSE CITY -- Several agencies in northern Michigan will split more than $600,000 for homeless assistance programs in Grand Traverse, Antrim and Leelanau counties.

More than $18.7 million is headed to western Michigan and the Upper Peninsula for housing assistance through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's "Continuum of Care" programs. It's part of more than $56 million being distributed in the state and nearly $1.4 billion throughout the country.

Locally, the Grand Traverse/Leelanau Foundation for Mental Health will receive four grants totaling $205,071. Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan Inc. is set for two grants totaling $77,543, while the state Department of Community Health will receive $166,680. Two grants totaling $163,392 are headed to the Women's Resource Center for its Sara's House and domestic violence housing initiatives.
