Limited access hunt deadline is today

TRAVERSE CITY -- Today is the last opportunity for hunters to buy a Pure Michigan Hunt application.

The program is a drawing that allows three applicants to participate in every limited-access hunt in 2010 -- elk, bear, antlerless deer and both spring and fall wild turkey. The winners also will get the first pick of a hunting zone in a managed waterfowl area reserved hunt.

Hunters who are ineligible to apply for elk licenses because of past success may participate in the Pure Michigan Hunt program and hunt elk, if chosen in the drawing.

Applications cost $4 and individuals may apply as many times as they like.

As of this week, 24,781 applications were purchased across the state. That includes 398 in Grand Traverse County, 204 in Leelanau County, 111 in Benzie County, 98 in Antrim County and 79 in Kalkaska County, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
