TRAVERSE CITY — The State Bar of Michigan honored a local attorney for his environmental work.

James Olson of the Traverse City firm Olson, Bzdok & Howard received the bar's Champion of Justice Award, given each year to attorneys for "extraordinary professional accomplishments" that benefit the community.

Olson, 65, was recognized for his long-running work in defending the state's natural resources, including his representation of Michigan Citizens for Water Conservation vs. Nestle Waters of North America, a legal case the state bar called a "David and Goliath story."

"I feel very grateful because it recognizes the importance of the environment and the waters of the state as matters of justice," Olson said.

Olson and other recipients of state bar awards will be honored at a Sept. 29 Banquet in Grand Rapids.
