Nonprofit Artcenter to use Con Foster

Nonprofit Artcenter to use Con Foster for its workshops

TRAVERSE CITY — Bay views will provide inspiration for artists who participate in upcoming workshops offered by Artcenter Traverse City.

The Con Foster Museum building in Clinch Park will be the setting for a variety of classes offered by Artcenter, a nonprofit organization that attracts top-name artists and instructors to their summer workshop series.

Traverse City officials recently agreed to allow the group to use the vacant building. Previous tenants included the Great Lakes Children's Museum in 2008 and the Con Foster Museum from 1936-2001.

"We approached the commission when we heard the building might be available. It is just a perfect fit for our needs," said David Lawrence, president of Artcenter Traverse City's board of directors.

Sharon Kelley, who chairs Artcenter's education committee, thinks the Con Foster site is a wonderful spot to spark creativity.

"Often we have painters that like to go outdoors. What better place could there be than by the bay," she said.

Nine classes, including watercolor, pastels, acrylics and contemporary quilt art are scheduled during the summer workshop series.

Lawrence said he hopes workshops on the waterfront will provide an incentive for visitors to see more of downtown Traverse City.

"Previously, classes have been held in other areas and our artists may never have even seen the bay, seen downtown. We are hoping they will see Traverse City and want to come back with their families," he said.
