Historic Barns Park gets new trail segment

TRAVERSE CITY — Bicyclists and hikers will have a new segment of trail to traverse at the Historic Barns Park because Garfield Township received a $300,000 grant.

The 56-acre park is at the Grand Traverse Commons' southwest corner and features trails, barns and a planned botanical garden. The township was awarded the grant from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund, and township Supervisor Chuck Korn said most of the money will pay for a trail to run from the Copper Ridge area to the Commons' new south campus entrance.

The rest of the money will help pay for a picnic grove area, a wildlife viewing platform and rehab of an existing structure into a visitor's center.

"This grant is fantastic news," said Matt Cowall, executive director of a recreational authority that oversees the property. "It will help us get a lot more work done in the park."
