Mason wins Benzie prosecutor post

Incumbent Hubbell keeps position in Leelanau County

TRAVERSE CITY — It appears a youthful prosecutor will take the reins in Benzie County.

Republican Sara M. Mason had a solid lead on Michael L. Smith and Anthony Cicchelli — Benzie's former prosecutor — with 11 of 13 precincts reporting late Tuesday. The winner of that race won't face a Democratic challenger in the November election.

Mason, who runs a private practice in Beulah, couldn't be reached for comment. She graduated from high school in 2001 and Central Michigan University in 2005 before obtaining her law degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing.

Incumbent Leelanau County Prosecutor Joe Hubbell handily beat challenger Sara Brubaker, who served as prosecutor from 2001 until Hubbell beat her in 2004. Early results showed Hubbell leading by a roughly 2 to 1 margin.

"I'm pretty satisfied. I'll probably be the first three-term prosecutor in Leelanau County," he said. "I think the fact that voters are supporting me is a testament to the good job I've done and the good job my office has done."

Longtime Antrim County Prosecutor Charles Koop was unopposed. In Grand Traverse, Republican Bob Cooney, a current assistant prosecutor, ran unopposed. He won't face any challengers in November.

Incumbent Grand Traverse Prosecutor Alan Schneider is retiring at the end of the year.
