Report: Teen died from electrical shock, drowning

TRAVERSE CITY — A preliminary autopsy shows Michael Knudsen, of Mancelona, died from a combination of electrical shock and drowning as he swam at Clinch Park Marina.

“Preliminary indications are that a short in a 220-volt electrical line, which carries power to a section of floating dock, caused electrical current to enter the water in and around the location where the teen was found,” according to a statement released today by Traverse City’s Public Services Department. “It appears that the short did not cause the circuit breaker to shut off power.”

Knudsen, 18, died Monday evening after firefighters pulled his body from about 20 feet of water. Swimming is prohibited in the marina.

The section of dock where Knudsen’s body was found remains closed and without power as authorities investigate.
