ACME — Authorities believe an early-morning lightning storm ignited an Acme residence.
Two residents on Wednesday escaped their home on Wolverine Drive without injury before flames torched their roof. Grand Traverse Metro Fire officials doused the blaze within an hour, but not before it destroyed the roof.
"Flames were flying up through the roof," said assistant fire Chief Terry Flynn, who responded to the scene. "(The residents) heard what they described as a loud explosion. That was also confirmed by the neighbors."
Officials continue to investigate, but believe lightning played a role.
