Glen Lake bomb threat a 'hoax'

MAPLE CITY — Students were evacuated and sent home early after a bomb threat was reported at Glen Lake Community Schools.

A written note was found about 1 p.m. Friday in the high school wing of the building and school officials made the decision to evacuate, Leelanau County Sheriff Mike Oltersdorf said.

Sheriff's deputies, firefighters, the National Park Service and a bomb sniffing dog from Grand Traverse County spent three hours searching the school, grounds and outbuildings.

"It was a hoax," Oltersdorf said. "There was no bomb, and that's good news. The bad thing is it was disruptive for the students and parents."

School staff contacted parents to inform them their children would be released early, Glen Lake school board member Patrick Middleton said, adding that it appeared students were sent on buses only if parents were reached.

He has a first-grader and a third-grader.

"I'm sure they probably did that as a precautionary measure," Middleton said. "I hope, being on the school board, we can find out who they are."

Oltersdorf said there are some leads and his office will seek criminal charges if their investigation identifies the note writer.

The threat at Glen Lake follows one discovered Wednesday on a bathroom wall at Kingsley Middle School.
