Woman's body found; murder suspected

Police launch homicide investigation

KALKASKA -- Police launched a homicide investigation after discovering a woman's body in a swampy area in Oliver Township.

State police believe the body is that of Sarah Elizabeth Wilson, 26, of the Detroit suburb of Bloomfield Township. Wilson was last seen May 9 near M-66 in Orange Township and was reported missing last week.

"I can tell you circumstantially, we're relatively confident this is our missing person," State Police Lt. Kenneth Holmes said.

Police found the body in a swampy area about a "stone's throw" from Mecum Road near Sigma Road at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Holmes said. Forensic tests and an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death and positively identify the remains.

Holmes "could not even venture to say at this point" how the woman died, although foul play is suspected.

The body is in poor condition and is consistent with a body that's been deceased for about two weeks, Holmes said.

Wilson was last seen with her friend, Oakland County resident David DeJonge, 44, who has a cabin in Kalkaska County. DeJonge is a suspect in the case, Holmes said.

"At this point, the Kalkaska County prosecutor has looked at what we have," Holmes said. "He is in the midst of considering charges against the suspect."

DeJonge was arrested near Grand Rapids this week on an unrelated drug possession warrant from the Auburn Hills Police Department in Oakland County. Lt. Thomas Hardesty of Auburn Hills said DeJonge is in custody and was scheduled to be arraigned on that charge Friday afternoon.
