KALKASKA A downstate man faces a possible lifetime prison sentence if convicted for a grisly slaying at a cabin in Kalkaska County's Orange Township.
David DeJonge, 44, of Bloomfield Township, was arraigned Friday on a count of open murder and mutilation of a body. Judge Lynne Buday of the 46th Circuit Trial Court in Kalkaska set his bond at $2 million.
DeJonge also is charged as a habitual offender, which can increase sentencing guidelines.
Traverse City attorney Robert Whims appeared on DeJonge's behalf, but has not yet formally been hired for the defense. DeJonge will plead not guilty in what Whims predicted could be a complex case.
DeJonge is accused of killing Sarah Wilson, 26, also of Bloomfield Township. Police discovered her torso on May 22 in a swampy area near Mecum Road in Kalkaska County's Oliver Township. Family members in Big Rapids reported her missing on May 12.
DeJonge was arrested near Grand Rapids on an unrelated drug possession warrant and was in custody there since May 21. Police brought him to Kalkaska on Thursday evening.
DeJonge remains in custody at the Kalkaska County Jail. His next court date is July 2 for a pre-trial hearing and again July 30 for a preliminary examination, court officials said.
