Deputy allegedly assaulted after chase

BEULAH -- Police arrested a Lake Ann man who allegedly assaulted a Benzie County sheriff's deputy after leading authorities on a chase.

David Andrew Peckham, 19, was arraigned Monday afternoon on charges of resisting and obstructing and fleeing and eluding police, a court spokeswoman said.

Benzie deputies at about 9 p.m. Saturday went to a residence in Lake Ann after someone reported an assault and a reckless driver. Deputies located Peckham's vehicle, but they said he drove off and wouldn't stop.

Police said Peckham led them on a chase through the Windtree Oaks and Hardwood Acres subdivisions and along Bellows Road. The chase ended when Peckham's vehicle ran off the road into a ditch near Nofsger and Lake Ann roads, police said in a statement.

Peckham allegedly fought with and assaulted Deputy Tom Whale, police said, and left the area. Authorities found Peckham about an hour later and arrested him.
