TRAVERSE CITY -- No decision has been made regarding boat mooring near city beaches.
The state Department of Natural Resources held a public hearing last week on whether to allow the city to expand swim areas and establish "no-boat mooring" sections near the beach.
About 100 people attended the hearing, mostly boat operators who don't want more limitations, said Mary Dettloff, DNR spokeswoman. DNR officials are still in the process of gathering information and likely won't make a decision for at least another 30 days, she said.
The city in July appealed the DNR's denial of permits for expanded swim areas and "no-boat mooring" sections. After the city's appeal, a DNR policy came to light that suggests the DNR hold public hearings before making initial determinations on permits that could be controversial.
