BEAR LAKE -- Authorities responded to an ammonia leak at a cold storage facility.
Police and fire units went the Traverse Cold Storage Facility in Bear Lake Township shortly before 7:30 p.m. Friday. A 2-inch pipe was spewing ammonia, so authorities stopped the leak and checked the surrounding area.
One person complained of a mild illness, but didn't want medical attention. Traffic along U.S. 31 was shut down for more than an hour as authorities dealt with the leak.
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality was scheduled to complete an investigation into the leak Monday, Manistee County Emergency Services Coordinator Lt. Ken Falk said. Its cause still isn't clear.
