Charges filed against man for alleged fraud

FROM STAFF REPORTS

CADILLAC -- A Cadillac businessman faces felony charges for alleged contractor fraud.

Larry Elwin Morton, 37, faces criminal charges for allegedly fraudulently using building contract funds, being an unlicensed residential builder and passing a bad check more than $500. That includes two felonies and one misdemeanor for not possessing a license.

In September 2007, Morton contracted with a Cadillac couple to build a house in Kingsley. A construction loan through a Wexford County mortgage company was issued and $32,000 was withdrawn, but work was not completed, Michigan State Police said.

Police discovered Morton did not have a builder's license and bounced a refund check to the Cadillac couple for building supplies they purchased, police said.

Morton was arraigned Monday in 84th District Court in Cadillac and released on a personal recognizance bond.
