TRAVERSE CITY -- Two local river cleanup projects received boosts with state grants.
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality awarded 18 small grants as part of the 2009 Volunteer River, Stream and Creek Cleanup Program. Among the recipients are the Grand Traverse Conservation District in Traverse City and the Wexford Conservation District in Cadillac.
Most of the projects involve cleaning trash and debris from the water and along stream banks.
The Grand Traverse Conservation District received $1,105 for the fifth annual Boardman River Clean Sweep event, while the Wexford Conservation District received $775 for the Clam River cleanup project.
The DEQ awarded nearly $29,780 for stream cleanup efforts this year.
