'Promise' kept for 11 Northport seniors
NORTHPORT -- A new class of students received college scholarships from the Northport Promise fund.
Eleven graduating seniors at Northport Public School were honored this week. They include Quenton Buss, Mariah Crowgey, Shane Detweiler, Brayton Farr, Jason Holland, Kris Korson, Kristina Leabo, Tyler Millard, Rita Roman, Eli Shiner and Shauna Sitarek.
In addition, six winners from last year's inaugural class were granted funds for their second year of college. They include Ryan Blessing, Octavia Buss, Sophia Mosher, Rose Petoskey, Betsy Shiner and Basil Stowe.
The Promise was modeled after the Kalamazoo Promise, a scholarship program that gives funds to students based on how long they attended school in the district.
In Northport, students can receive up to $2,000 annually. High school seniors need to be accepted to a college, university or trade school and have been Northport students since at least ninth grade to qualify.
They need to reapply and earn at least a 2.0 grade-point average to maintain eligibility.
