TRAVERSE CITY — Nearly $500,000 in federal funding will be used to finance dam removal on the Boardman River.
The Conservation Resource Alliance and the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians were awarded two grants that will help pay for removing Sabin, Boardman and Brown Bridge dams and modifying the Union Street dam.
The money is from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Circle of Flight Grant and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Tribal Wildlife Grant.
The project is expected to cost $5 to $8 million and will be the largest dam removal project in state history.
