Area's primary voter turnout average

TRAVERSE CITY — Voter turnout for the August primary was decidedly average, area clerks said.

About 36 percent of registered voters cast a ballot in Kalkaska County, 40 percent came out in Leelanau County and 28 percent voted in Grand Traverse County. Benzie County registered a 25 percent turnout, and Antrim saw 33 percent.

About 28 percent of Traverse City voters showed up to the polls.

Statewide, fewer than a quarter of all registered voters cast ballots.

Local numbers largely are on par with what clerks saw in past primary elections. Turnout for general elections often reaches 60 to 70 percent.

"That's about normal for us; we usually don't get much more than a third," Antrim County Clerk Laura Sexton said. "In November, we'll get more."

Despite a host of millages, proposals and several contested races, voters just didn't seem to get out in higher-than-normal numbers for Tuesday's election.

"I was hoping to get to 35, but I didn't get there," Grand Traverse County Clerk Linda Coburn said.

"It's higher than I expected. I thought it would be about 25," Traverse City Clerk Debbra Curtiss said. "I'm glad it was a little bit higher."

Certain townships always seem to have a better showing than others, clerks said. Leland Township topped Leelanau County's list with 47 percent, and one precinct in Grand Traverse County's Peninsula Township hit 45 percent.

"They're good voters," Coburn said. "Peninsula is always our highest voter turnout, and Acme is usually second."

Lake Township topped Benzie County's list when 386 of 767 registered voters there showed up, marking a roughly 50 percent turnout.

The township had a fire millage renewal that may have attracted a good deal of voters, but township Clerk Anna Grobe said Lake always sees high numbers.

"We have always had a good turnout. Our voters come out in force, and it's not dependent on what issues are being voted on," she said. "It makes me feel good that the voters in Lake Township are exercising their rights."

Elk Rapids and Forest Home townships in Antrim County both had roughly 41 percent to win their county race.
