Leland woman pleads to fraud

LELAND — A Leland woman who defrauded three condominium associations of more than $190,000 pleaded guilty in federal court to one count of mail fraud.

Kimberly Dawn Bunbury, 55, offered her plea Monday in U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids. Mail fraud is punishable by up to 20 years in prison, but the plea deal qualifies Bunbury for a lesser sentence. She will be sentenced on May 21.

Between 2006 and 2010, Bunbury acted as a treasurer for three condominium associations in northern Michigan: Bay Hill of Leland, Portage Ridge at Onekama, and the Reserve at Boyne Mountain. Her duties required her to collect condo dues from members and using the funds to pay group expenses.

In the plea agreement, Bunbury admitted that beginning in 2006 she used condo funds for "personal expenses" and concealed her actions in regular reports to the associations.

"As a result of this fraudulent scheme, the defendant was able to misappropriate approximately $194,000 for her own use," the agreement states.

The plea deal also requires Bunbury to forfeit more than $90,000 of the stolen funds; she already repaid approximately $104,000 to the victims.
