Group drops charter school application

TRAVERSE CITY — A group interested in starting a new local charter school dropped its application to Traverse City Area Public Schools.

Associate Superintendent Jayne Mohr said the North Prep Academy Charter School development team, which includes West Senior High Principal Joe Tibaldi, withdrew its application this week and is no longer interested in pursuing the school.

TCAPS received the application last fall, and the school board created a special committee made up of teachers, administrators and parents to review the proposal. The group met three times, and a decision on whether to recommend the application to the district's curriculum committee for review was expected this month.

If the district had approved the charter, Tibaldi was expected to leave West to take a leadership role with the new school as early as next fall.
