Police: Man hit officer

He reportedly yelled obscenities at several passing cars

TRAVERSE CITY — A Traverse City man faces several criminal counts after police said he hit an officer and caused a downtown disturbance.

Thomas Hall, 24, of Traverse City is charged with two felonies and a misdemeanor stemming from a Wednesday incident in downtown Traverse City, said Prosecutor Alan Schneider.

Police said they received calls about a man on Front Street yelling obscenities at passing cars. Officers responded, but didn't locate him until receiving a report a short time later that he was near Union Street. Authorities said the man grabbed at the mirrors of cars as they drove past and yelled at drivers.

"Officers found him and talked to him and told him that he couldn't be in the road," said Capt. Brian Heffner.

An acquaintance of the suspect said she would take the man home, but a short while later the suspect approached a city police officer's marked car near Midtown Drive and Cass Street. The suspect hit the police car, yelled obscenities and made an obscene gesture to the officer, police said.

The officer got out of the police car, and the suspect hit the officer, Heffner said.

The officer and the suspect received abrasions as he was arrested, Heffner said. The officer did not seek treatment. The suspect was taken to Munson Medical Center for a toxicity level evaluation and to check on his abrasions. He then was lodged at the Grand Traverse County jail.

Hall faces felony counts related to assaulting a police officer and attempted malicious destruction of the police car and a misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct, authorities said.
