Marta Hepler Drahos: Stay vigilant

A recent story on Women's History Month and the status of women in America brought lots of memories, many from women my age, who grew up in two different worlds.

"I feel like I'm the straddling generation," said one, a woman in her 60s. "I spent the first 30 years of my life in a time when assumptions were that women stayed home. Then the women's movement came along and questioned everything. The second half of my life I've tried to live a more fully equal life. But it's hard to change gears mid-life."

"What has me puzzled, nationwide, is the silence of the women's lib movement in regards to Shariah law from the Muslims," wrote a reader. "It is being allowed by some judges, i.e., Oklahoma, and the women are silent?! I do not understand why."

Maybe the most important lesson we can learn during Women's History Month is that history repeats itself unless we're vigilant.
