Former Bear Lake resident Jason Wilder Evans is among eight people receiving "The Best of Washington" award from The D.C. Office of Motion Picture and Television Development.
Evans' 17-minute documentary, "Released to Life," is about people re-entering society after incarceration. Evans was film editor, videographer and scored the film.
"Released to Life" was produced in 2010 as a production of The Documentary Center at George Washington University while Evans was earning a master's certificate in documentary filmmaking.

Tamera Valenzuela is the Elk Rapids Women's Woman of the Year.
She is the vice president of the group and has helped it transition into a local organization over the last year. She's also a member of the Elk Rapids Lion Club.

AAS defines basic standards to guide those who serve persons in crisis. Third Level has been accredited since 1988.

Fourteen members of the Manistee Middle School Bands participated in the District One MSBOA Honor Band recently at Shelby High School. Students chosen for this honor received a first division rating on solo performance at the November 2011 Solo and Ensemble Festival: Megan Gutowski, Kendra Schalow, Ashley Elo, Alexis Adway, Olivia Selbee, Dakotah O'Hagan, David Ely, Ian Kiefer, Briana Larsen, Kyle Schaubroeck, Noah Cameron, Noah Antal, Jared Wrzesinski and Chase Reid.

Julius Campeau, of Suttons Bay, has been accepted to the University of Northwestern Ohio to begin classes in the August 2012 session, where he will be majoring in the agriculture program.
A senior at Suttons Bay High School, he is the son of John and Danielle Campeau.
