Liebner Vasa grand champ

TRAVERSE CITY -- It was a memorable weekend for Andy Liebner.

A day after winning the Vasa 50K, the Marquette resident captured the Gran Travers 16K on Sunday at Timber Ridge to wrap up the weekend's grand championship.

Liebner won the 16K race in 47 minutes, 40 seconds. Cheboygan's Dennis Paull was second (48:11) while Williamsburg's Ross Williams finished third (50:18).

Cheboygan's Tracy Hardin was the overall female winner in 1:00:58. Amy Wichern from Lake Ann was second (1:02:34) and Gaylord's Ann Wagar was third (1:04:37).

The grand championship was awarded based on the best combined time in Saturday's 50K and Sunday's 16K. Eighteen skiers competed in both races.

Reserve grand champions were given to Paull and Traverse City's Susan Vigland for best combined time in the 16K and Saturday's 27K.

The Gran Travers also featured a 6K race on Sunday.

Raymond Innis was the male champion in 22:51. James Padden was second (23:30) and Evan Cover was third (23:47).

Hilde Gronvold won the women's race in 25:04, followed by Hannah Meachum (25:43) and Maria Frick (26:52).
