-- To writer, columnist, child and family advocate and educator Evelyn Peterson, who died Oct. 18 at age 76 after an eight-month battle with cancer. An early childhood and development teacher for 45 years, Peterson wrote parent and child columns for the Detroit Free Press, the Nashville Tennessean and the Traverse City Record-Eagle as well as features for Children and Families, the journal for the National Head Start Association. She also was co-founder and first teacher of the Grand Traverse City Co-Op Nursery School.

-- To the Grand Traverse Sheriff's Department, county jail and courthouse staff for reacting quickly to the false meningitis scare at the jail last week. Jail staff were notified that a new inmate at the jail might have meningitis and locked down the facility until authorities obtained medical records and determined the report was false. A trial in the 86th District courtroom also was shut down because the bailiff had been at the jail and could have been exposed. The lockdown lasted less than an hour.

-- To the more than 100 Traverse City Central students who are running cross country. It's the second year in a row that the total number as eclipsed 100. This year's team includes 51 boys and 51 girls.

-- To Traverse Bay Youth Soccer teams for spurring about $3.4 million in direct spending across the region, according to a recent study by the Traverse Bay Economic Development Corp. Combined soccer events attracted 15,900 young athletes and their families, according to responses from almost 700 parents. The study also showed that the median average income of those attending is nearly twice that of a typical Michigan tourist — using more than 2,000 hotel rooms a night and frequenting nearly 100 restaurants and dozens of retail stores.

-- To the Watershed Center Grand Traverse for its fifth annual Fresh Water Summit on Friday, which featured talks on the Boardman River dam removals, inland lake fish shelter, the Thunder Bay National Sanctuary and more.

-- To all the participants in the fourth annual Zombie Run 5K race Saturday morning.

-- To the History Center of Traverse City for the workshop and lecture on women's history by Dr. Elizabeth Faue of Wayne State University last week as part of its inaugural Legends exhibit. The center plans three years of fall and spring Legends exhibits focusing on local people, past and recent, from diverse backgrounds who together built the community.
