Newsmakers

  • Steven Schmatz, 15, competed in the 2012 Michigan Health Occupations Students of America recently at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa in Acme. Steven won the Gold Medal in Pathophysiology. He now moves up to the HOSA National Competition on June 20-23 in Orlando, Fla. A sophomore at International Academy High School in Bloomfield Hills, he is the grandson of Duane and Audrey Schmatz of Traverse City.
  • Fourteen students from the Early Childhood Education program at the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District Career-Tech Center returned to Traverse City with an array of gold and silver medals after competing in leadership aptitude events at the 2012 Family, Career and Community Leaders of America State Leadership Conference. Elk Rapids High School junior Monica Jarvis and Kingsley High School junior Karlee Hintsala both qualified to compete in the National Leadership Conference. Other winners included Courtney Beeman, Maddie Montgomery and Ashley Trowbridge, Kingsley High School; Alyssa Wolf, Taylor Williams, Ciara Swartout, Sam Kelly and Hannah Preston, Traverse City West Senior High School; Kim Schmidt, Buckley High School; Kirstie Fisher and Shelby Miller, Traverse City Central High School.
  • Traverse City Central High School junior Nicole Tubacki was chosen from 1,750 applicants to participate in the 2012 Minority Introduction to Engineering & Sciences Program this summer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The MITES class represents diverse communities, cultures, geographic locations, interests, and academic successes. During the six-week program, students have the opportunity to learn a multitude of topics available at MIT, one of the leading science and technology institutions in the world.
  • Members of the TEACH Homeschool Odyssey of the Mind team earned a trip to the World Finals in Ames, Iowa. They presented their long-term problem and tackle a spontaneous challenge while meeting and competing with teams from around the globe. Three other Odyssey of the Mind teams from the region also qualified for the World Finals: Traverse City West Senior High School, Crystal Lake Elementary School and Glen Lake Schools.
