n An important improvement is being made at Central High School by removing the heating plant. The placing of the boilers in specially prepared rooms below the floor of the basement and entirely outside of the building will greatly increase the efficiency of the plant.
n Last Saturday about forty of the friends and relatives gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Schane at Kingsley in surprise and to help celebrate their silver wedding anniversary. General visiting and games were the evening's entertainment. At a late hour, a bounteous supper was served.
n Florence Miller returned to her home in Manistee after a week's visit at the home of John Helfrich of Ogdensburg. Several social gatherings were planned during her visit to acquaint her with Mr. Helfrich's neighbors.
n Mrs. H. E. John, who has been visiting relatives at Northport for the past two weeks, returned to her home in Grand Rapids Wednesday. She was accompanied by her sister, Miss Edna Baumberger.
n The Ried Auto Co. has accepted the agency for the Paige Detroit car and their contract calls for delivery of the 1913 model later this month. The Page Detroit is made by the same company that manufactures the Lozier, on a smaller scale, is kept up in the smaller car. The thousand dollar car will include full equipment and has a forty horse power motor and a full floating rear axle.
n Dayton Selby, who for the past 12 years has been the editor and publisher of the Empire Journal, has accepted the principalship of the Glen Arbor schools. He and Mrs. Selby are moving to Glen Arbor this week. He began his new duties last Monday.
n The rainy, cold weather we have been having the past week has been very favorable to fungus growth known as the apple scab. Efforts will be made at once by the fruit growers of Western Michigan to prevent further damage of this year's crop by spraying the trees with the commercial lime-sulphur of 1 to 40 strength.
n C. A. Bugbee arrived today to look after business interests and will leave for Kalamazoo Thursday where he expects to locate. Mr. and Mrs. Bugbee have been spending some time in Sandusky, Ohio the past several weeks.
n LaVerne Helges left Friday night for Detroit, called there by the sudden illness of his brother, Louis. He plans to remain in that city until his brother is home from his hospitalization.
n Over two hundred people attended a grand ball given in Horst's academy Saturday evening. It was a gala event and the final to the two days of the Rebekkah's conference held in the city.
n John Hoxsie of Acme township, one of the pioneer residents of the county is a candidate for county treasurer. Mr. Hoxsie is one of the best known citizens of the region and has always taken an active part in the development of the region. If elected, he will give his entire attention to the office.
n G. E. Parker and wife and son, Harold of Lansing, arrived in the city this morning for a few days' visit before continuing their trip to the Soo and Mackinac Island. They have several friends at both places and plan to stop by to greet them.
n Advice on deportment. If you desire to be respected, keep clean. Fine clothes and decorations do not impress the appearance or beauty of an untidy person.
n Medical advice of a century ago. Everyday washing should be the rule the year round.
