  • To Traverse City for deciding to fix city streets and sidewalks in the Pine and State street area before Labor Day. The area is close to the city's River Terrace housing complex, which is home to many senior residents and people with disabilities. The decision ensures the repairs will be made this year. The project includes Traverse City Light & Power upgrades, which require an earlier start date to finish the work in early November. The project will reconstruct Pine Street from the West Front intersection around the corner to State to the Union Street intersection. Plans call for bike lanes, on-street parking and sidewalk repairs. The State and Union intersection will get a new pedestrian signal that counts the seconds. The traffic island at the Pine and West Front intersection also will be enlarged to make it easier for pedestrians to stop as they cross.
  • To Traverse City illustrator and graphic artist Gabe Augustine who spent 200 hours creating this year's Traverse City Film Festival poster — a strip of film forming a figure 8 and the words "just (infinitely) great movies." The design is used on the festival guide, merchandise signs, buttons and other items. Augustine is the festival's volunteer art director. His work and that of full-time graphic design interns Chelsea Benson and Maris Taphouse saves the festival thousands of dollars, organizers said.
  • To all the volunteers who help make possible the Traverse City Film Festival and the daily operation of the State Theatre. The eighth annual film festival starts Tuesday and ends Aug. 5.
  • To the U.S. Coast Guard helicopter air crew that last week rescued a South Manitou Island maintenance employee with heart attack symptoms from the island to the Traverse City air station and then on to Munson Medical Center.
  • To Grand Traverse County for ranking sixth in the state for maternal and infant well-being, according to Right Start in Michigan 2012. The information was released by the Michigan League for Human Services and was based on 2008-2010 data.
  • To the Cherry Capital Men's Chorus for its upcoming benefit concert Sunday at First Christian Church. Proceeds go to the Foundation for Mental Health, which advocates for affordable housing, public awareness of mental health issues and support services for people with mental health needs.
