Clem dominates Slammers

Bums starter logs team's 1st complete game on 100 pitches

JOLIET, Ill. — Jacob Clem threw Traverse City's first complete game of the season as the Beach Bums took the opening game of a three-game series with Joliet by a 5-1 score.

Clem (2-2) needed just 100 pitches to go the distance.

The win puts the Beach Bums a game up on Southern Illinois atop the East Division. The Miners lost 9-6 to Normal.

Clem allowed just one run on five hits, walking two and striking out four while throwing first-pitch strikes to 26 out of 33 hitters he faced. He induced 16 ground ball outs.

Sean Gusrang drove in Chase Burch with a second-inning single, and Brian Heere came in on a Jose Vargas sacrifice fly in the third.

The Beach Bums tacked on three more in the fifth as Vargas doubled in Ryan Still and Jeff Flagg's single brought in Vargas and Church for a 5-1 lead. Joliet scored one run in the second on a Kyle Maunus ground out.

Right-hander Reid Kelly will start tonight for the Beach Bums, while Joliet's Tyler Ware makes his professional debut.
