'Heavenly' program at Kalkaska Library

Kalkaska — Joe Brooks from the Grand Traverse Astronomical Society will give a presentation on heavenly bodies at the Kalkaska County Library.

Brooks' program will start at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at the library, 247 S. Cedar St. He will discuss the differences between meteors, meteoroids and meteorites and how to spot them in the sky and on the ground.

'Heart-to-Heart' fundraiser at Lil Bo

Traverse City — As part of events during American Heart Month, Lil Bo Pub & Grille will host a benefit Thursday, Feb. 2, for Munson Medical Center's Cardiac Care Fund, which supports the Heart-to-Heart for Women program.

The event from 5 to 8 p.m. will include acoustic music by Three Hour Tour, a silent auction and free appetizers. Lil Bo also will donate 25 percent of sales to the Cardiac Care Fund.

'Invite A Friend' to lunch at Glen Eagle

Traverse City — Glen Eagle retirement community invites area seniors to invite a friend and come to lunch on Friday, Feb. 3.

Applications for Circle grants

Traverse City — The Three Generations Circle of Women Givers is accepting grant applications for its 2012 granting cycle.

The Circle supports projects that promote the economic self-sufficiency and well being of women and girls. Grants are made to local programs or projects that focus on innovative programming addressing a critical need, institutional operating support, capital projects, and capacity building.

Chili cookoff benefits fire corps

LAKE ANN — A chili cookoff to benefit the Inland Township Fire Corps is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 4.

The fee to enter the cookoff is $10 per entry in each category. The four categories are Tex-Mex, Vegetarian, White and Meat. There also will be a People's Choice.

The cost to eat the chili is $5 per person.

The cookoff will be held at the fire hall, 19668 Honor Highway (U.S. 31). For more information, call 275-6552.

Free tax prep and more Feb. 4

TRAVERSE CITY — Free tax preparation will be offered during the Saturday Special Feb. 4.

There will be tax assistance and workshops on personal finance, special savings accounts, budgeting, credit, homelessness, home ownership and more, presented by the Traverse Bay Poverty Reduction Initiative.

Advance registration is recommended for the event, which is scheduled for 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the TBA Career-Tech Center, 880 Parsons Road.

Interlochen library hosts beach party

INTERLOCHEN — Interlochen Public Library will host its annual Beach Party from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, at the Golden Fellowship Hall, in the same building as the library.

Wear shorts and sandals and bring a beach towel to enjoy sand, water, stories, snacks, crafts and other fun. Admission is free.

Fishing derby helps The Rock

FIFE LAKE — The annual Rock Ice Fishing Derby is Saturday, Feb. 4, on Fife Lake.

A total of $2,000 in cash prizes will be awarded. Registration begins at 6 p.m. at the DNR boat launch in Fife Lake. Money raised benefits The Rock youth center in Kingsley.
