TC native wins six Hopwood Awards

ANN ARBOR — Traverse City native Emily Pittinos won six Hopwood Awards in literature in the University of Michigan Hopwood Underclassmen Contest.

Pittinos earned awards in fiction, nonfiction and poetry. She also received the Jeffrey L. Weisburg Memorial Prize in Poetry, the Roy W. Cowden Memorial Fellowship, and the Roy and Helen Meador Writing Award.

The Hopwood Awards come with a stipend and are among the oldest college writing prizes in the country. Pittinos, a Pathfinder alumna, is the daughter of Audrey and Christopher Pittinos, of Beulah.

Fleda Brown giving talk in Central Lake

CENTRAL LAKE — Poet Fleda Brown will talk to the Central Lake Library's Book Club on Wednesday, Feb. 8.

The book club has been reading Brown's latest book, "Driving With Dvorak." You don't need to be a member of the book club to attend the noon event at the library, 7900 Maple St.

Brown was on the faculty of the University of Delaware, where she founded the Poets in the Schools Program. She writes a monthly column for the Record-Eagle and has a summer home in Central Lake.

Workshops, party at Kingsley library

KINGSLEY — Upcoming events at the Kingsley Branch of the Traverse Area District Library include a valentine party and e-reader workshops.

The Fancy Nancy Valentine Party is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 11, 12:30-1:30 p.m., and recommended for ages 3-8 with parent or guardian. Dress fancy and RSVP by calling 263-5484 or emailing kbl@tadl.

The e-reader workshops are scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 16. The Kindle workshop is from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. The iPad, Android and phone workshop is scheduled for 4:30-5:30 p.m. The Nook and non-Kindle workshop is scheduled for 5:30-6:30 p.m. Bring your device and a laptop, if you have one. Champagne and chocolate for library

BEULAH — A Chocolate Champagne Evening benefits the Darcy Library.

The event is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 10, 7 p.m., at the library, 7238 Commercial St. Tickets are $20 in advance, available at the library, the Benzie County Chamber of Commerce, Crystal Crate and Cargo in Beulah, and The Bookstore in Frankfort. Tickets at the door are $25.

There will be live entertainment and a silent auction.

Dunes Review winter edition out

TRAVERSE CITY — The Dunes Review will launch its winter edition Saturday, Feb. 11.

The release party is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Brilliant Books, 118 E. Front St.

Jenny Robertson will receive the William J. Shaw Prize for poetry. Other local contributors will be reading from the issue, now in its 16th year.

Copies of The Dunes Review will be for sale, as well as chapbooks from Michigan Writers Cooperative Press.
