Kyle Laslo stopped 26 shots Thursday afternoon as the Traverse City North Stars edged Odessa 3-2 in a shootout in the NAHL Showcase Tournament.
The North Stars, now 2-0, tied the game on a Kyle Schemmp goal in the third period. They won the shootout 2-0 on goals by Alec Shields and Schemmp.
The win comes on the heels of a 4-1 triumph over Texas late Wednesday night.
“Two great wins,” Traverse City coach Chad Fournier said. “We’re very excited. We’re improving every day.”
Laslo has been a standout in both games.
“Kyle played really well (Wednesday) night and he held us in there (Thursday) and gave us a chance to win,” Fournier said. “He got us into the third period down only a goal. We picked it up, played stronger in the offensive zone and buried our chance. Then Kyle shut them out in the shootout.”
Shields scored Traverse City’s first goal, tying the game at 1 in the first period. After Odessa took a 2-1 lead on Sheldon Taylor’s second goal of the game, the Stars knotted it again on Schempp’s tally.
Shields scored first in the shootout, then Schempp beat Odessa goalie Connor Hellebuyck with a wrister to end it.
The North Stars out-shot the Jacks 38-28.
Laslo, who played in Canada last season, had 28 saves Wednesday.
“He played midget hockey in Detroit,” Fournier said. “We heard great things about Kyle. We were looking for a goalie when Tyler Marble left. We’re glad he came.”
The North Stars play Aberdeen today. The Wings are 1-1 after a 2-1 win over Wenatchee Thursday.
