Martha J. Ross

CENTRAL LAKE — Martha J. Ross, 95, of Central Lake, died peacefully with her family at her side Wednesday, June 27, 2012, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility.

She was born May 17, 1917, in Grand Rapids, the daughter of Frank A. and Mamie Madora (Newell) Roat.

Martha worked for many years at Michigan Bell and Knapp & Vogt Inc. in Grand Rapids. She was also the librarian at Oakview School System (Northview) and was on the Kent County Library Board.

In 1980, Marty and her husband, Robert, retired to Central Lake, where the "cottage" was an important place to gather family members and friends. Fourth of July activities that brought her family together every year were always a highlight for her. She was an active member of the First Congregational Church and the Central Lake Lionesses. Marty also loved to spend time with her family at the patio home in Timber Oaks, Port Richey, Fla.

Marty's kindness and happy attitude with people from all walks of life were always in the forefront of her thoughts and actions. All of her family members and friends were always inspired by her thoughtfulness and gracious attitude.

She is survived by her children, Julie Anne Ross, of Atlanta, Ga., Thomas Richard (Vickie) Ross, of Alden, Dan Robert (Jan) Ross, of Portage; seven grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Marty was preceded in death in 2008 by her husband of 69 years, Robert F. Ross. She was also preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Jessie L. Quant and Eleanor M. Wing.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 30, at First Congregational Church of Central Lake, with Pastor Don Sinclair officiating. The family will receive friends from noon until the time of the service.

The family will also receive friends Friday, July 6, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the 2nd Congregational Church in Grand Rapids. Graveside services will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Fairplains Cemetery, with Rev. Peter St. Martin officiating.
