ARCADIA — Dr. Frank W. Miller, 88, died July 3, 2010, after an extended struggle with cancer. He spent his final days surrounded by family and friends. He was born on June 23, 1922, in Akron, Ohio, the eldest child of Frank B. and Ruth Gravesmill Miller.
Frank received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1942 from the University of Kentucky, where he was captain of the tennis team.
During World War II, Frank served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. He taught navigation at Yale University prior to seeing action in the Pacific Theatre.
On Dec. 21, 1949, he married Betty Pickett in Greensboro, N.C.
Frank received his Master of Arts degree in Counseling Psychology in 1947 and a Ph.D. in 1950 from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., where he went on to serve for 25 years as Professor and Chairman of the Dept. of Counseling and Personnel Administration.
He was well published as an expert in the area of guidance and counseling and served as president and chairman of numerous professional organizations.
Frank and Betty, during their later years, divided their time between Sarasota, Fla., and Arcadia.
From infancy through death, Frank enjoyed his summer cottage and Camp Arcadia, a Lutheran family camp. He served from 1987 to 1996 on the board of directors of the Lutheran Camp Association. During his six years as LCA president, he was instrumental in implementing Vision 2002, a long-range strategic plan for the camp. He also authored the book, Arcadia: The First Sixty Years, which extensively chronicles the camp's early history.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Betty Miller; two sons, Lawrence Miller of Ft. Collins, Colo., and Russell L. (Sally) Miller of Traverse City; one daughter, Judith L. (Steve) Dean of Homer, Alaska; one sister, Carolyn (Richard) Blum of LaGrange, Ill.; grandchildren, Katherine A. Miller and Douglas M. Dean; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Donald W. Miller; and a daughter-in-law, Christine S. Miller.
A great husband, father and friends — Frank will be missed by all.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 8, at Trinity Lutheran Church of Arcadia, with Pastor Ted Biederweiden officiating. The Miller family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
